Summary of Parshas Bechukosai

The last portion in the book of Leviticus, Bechukosai, opens with a listing of the many material blessings and rewards that G-d will bestow upon the Jews when they diligently follow the Torah and its commandments. The Jews will harvest bountiful crops, symbolizing a life of wealth and comfort. The Jews will win decisively in battle: "Five will defeat one hundred and one hundred will defeat ten thousand." Peace will reign in the land of Israel.

The Torah then describes the tragedies and destruction that will occur if the Jews disregard the Torah and its teachings. The Creator will bring forth terrible misfortunes to remind the Jews that they should redirect their lives back to G-d. The Torah provides an eerie account of the persecution that has characterized much of our history to this day. However, G-d guarantees that he will never totally forsake the Jewish Nation, even when they are in exile. They will ultimately survive and prosper. The portion concludes with various laws regarding one who wishes to donate money or goods for use in the Temple.
